It's 1986, and 19-year-old Jonathan gets quite a culture shock when he leaves home to start his First year teacher training at Derbyshire College of Higher Education. Living in a large white (unmissable) student house full of lads, ranging from a posh boy from Kent to a northerner with anger issues, he must negotiate the perils of student life, which include seven-legged pub crawls in the dead of winter, fishnapping raids and cereals in the bedsheets, all at the same time as trying to woo a pretty blonde from Rochdale. Set in a time when cassette players were cool, contact with home was a red phonebox, but alcohol, lingerie and high jinx were still the order of the day, First Years Piranhas in the Bedroom is written with a great British dry wit. Its nostalgia for all things 80s as well as its "will-they-won't-they" romantic comedy gives it a really broad appeal The Young Ones meets High Fidelity.

normally wouldn't even think about getting to see, since the setting
was a British college in the 80s. (Let's not forget that it's also a
guy's experience of all of this.) It was very funny and entertaining
though. I thought the main character was a wonderful companion. I
would definitely recommend this book to someone who is looking for
something that's a little different than most books you're going to
pick up. There isn't a specific genre I could give to this book,
except maybe humor. But even that doesn't feel quite right, even
though this is quite a funny book. The title might scare you off a
little bit, but I promise it is aptly named and the reason for the
title is very funny. If you're looking for a bit of a break from your
normal reading and a little bit of an escape into another reality,
give this book a shot. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Writing in first person is always difficult, but Andy has tapped into the mind-set of a young man released into the big wide world of university perfectly. Our protagonist, Jonathon, is honest about all his experiences, fears and thoughts and it almost feels as if you've picked up his diary and are secretly reading his experiences first hand.
Aside from being an honest account of life at uni in the 1980's `First Years' is also a heart-warming romance that shows love as it is in reality. For many people the attraction to this gangly blonde Helen, who eats like a baby dinosaur and always seems to have food around her mouth, might be bizarre, but that is the reality of love. No-one else can understand why you love someone despite all the obvious faults, when really you love them because of the faults.
Andy includes everything from first impressions of new friends to each move in a cricket match, and while you might find yourself skimming through some parts, it all works together to create a truly believable character. Romance novels can be inclined to present an idealised version of real life and sometimes you need a real story to make you believe in love again. Well this is that story. Opening with the present day, as Jonathon takes his daughter to university, the reader is transported back in time to relive his experiences and meet the woman who changed his life. `First Years' would be ideal for anyone considering university, wanting to reminisce on past years or simply looking for a real love story. The university experience hasn't changed much in all these years and neither has love.
Gently paced and easy to slip into, this books tells of a young man's first steps away from home.
Jonathan sets out from home to deliver his daughter to her new student life in Plymouth. On the way he reminisces about his own First year at college, many years before. Life hasn't changed that much and students are still the same.
Through a series of encounters and amusing interludes, Jonathan finds his feet, and his first love.
It's quite English in flavour, although I imagine student life is much the same anywhere - definitely reminded me of college days.
